technology in order to prove that the suspect was indeed at the crime scene location. The
scientist was able to match the DNA of a bean pod found in the suspect’s truck to that of
a tree at the scene. This was the first time plant DNA was ever used as an evidentiary
tool at trial.

authorities were able to compile evidence to arrest not only the poacher, but also the man
who was buying and exporting the gall bladders as well.

Incredibly, a clerk from a convenience store survived a vicious assault wherein her coworker
was killed. Investigators were able to identify one of the four suspects through a

assailants suspected this and headed for the woods, but police were able to arrest them
with the aid of a SWAT team.

A 17-year-old girl disappeared from her driveway 2 days before her high school
graduation. Her kidnapper contacted the family repeatedly and even had the girl write a
letter to them. While still at large, he gave the family explicit directions as to where her
body was located. After the funeral, the kidnapper continued to taunt them and in the
process led authorities to another young victim in a nearby town. Detectives were finally
able to track down the killer from an imprint of a phone number imbedded in the original
victim’s letter.

ND194 “Ninja Bandit”
A string of bank robberies were being committed by a man dressed in all black “Ninja”
type gear. During this time, a homicide that evolved out of an attempted car theft was
also tied to this bank robber. The investigation led authorities to a fellow police officer
who was arrested for the robberies and the homicide.

ND195 “Evaporating Love”
A woman was found dead in her bathtub from an apparent accidental drowning, but
pathological evidence indicated it was a homicide. Detectives suspected either the
woman’s ex-husband or her new boyfriend. Although there was no physical evidence
linking the ex-husband to the crime, he made incriminating statements that proved to be
his undoing.

ND196 “Smile Now, Cry Later”
The body of a teenage girl was found in the local mountains outside Albuquerque. A
check of missing persons turned up nothing, but when the local news ran a description of
the victim, her mother positively identified her. Police had a suspect after they
questioned the victim’s 2 girlfriends and discovered that all 3 had accepted a ride from a
young man the day of the victim’s murder. The suspect was a parolee who vehemently
denied any knowledge of the crime even when investigators found the victim’s coat in his
home.

ND197 “Cleaning House”
Two seemingly unrelated murders were being investigated when a curious connection
was discovered between them. The victims each had arguments with a mutual neighbor.
When police brought the neighbor in for questioning, he quickly became a suspect and
was arrested. Evidence recovered from both of the crime scenes and the suspect’s
belongings gave the prosecution a strong, albeit, circumstantial case.

ND198 “A Very Evil Man”
For over a year, a serial sexual attacker had terrorized women in their homes despite a
special police task force set up to capture him. His youngest victim was just 13 years old.
The predator left very few clues, and later came back to the 13-year-old’s house to attack
her mother. Tragically, the young girl then took her own life. Police received a tip from
a wife who had found several women’s wallets and a ski mask in her husband’s car and
suspected that he was the man sought by authorities.

ND199 “Trick or Treat Murders”
A triple homicide left detectives with very few leads. However, shell casings from the
murder weapon were found at the crime scene. Extensive detective work and a tip helped
them link the gun used in the murder to four teenage boys. Of the four, three gave
corroborating statements, but the fourth, the shooter, went to trial and was convicted of
the murders.

A woman became violently ill and later died from what appeared to be Toxic Shock
Syndrome. Her family, however, insisted that there was foul play. The victim’s father
related that his daughter had been fearful that her husband was poisoning her. Forensic
evidence showed the cause of death to be arsenic poisoning. During trial, the husband’s
defense maintained that the victim had attempted to poison herself to keep her husband
from leaving her.

Police were initially left with few clues to help them solve the murder of a female
convenience store clerk. While questioning witnesses, they pieced together the fact that
the murderer had briefly posed as the store clerk in an attempt to avoid being identified
by a patron. Once the deception was discovered, a suspect was arrested, but authorities
had insufficient evidence and could not proceed. However, 16 years later, a new witness
surfaced and advances in forensic testing allowed prosecutors to proceed with a solid
case.

Nine days after a 12-year-old girl disappeared on Halloween night, police received an
anonymous letter leading them to her body. The killer then taunted detectives with

distribution ring. The gang known as the Burton Boys ran a violent crack cocaine

informant and he was later charged in her death. Once he was in custody, fellow gang
members gave statements to police that supported their leader’s guilt in the murder.

A 22-year-old college student was abducted from the driveway of her boyfriend’s home.
After 5 days of intensive investigation, detectives apprehended 3 men believed to have
kidnapped the girl. Two of these young men agreed to tell the story of her abduction in
exchange for immunity. In doing so, they implicated the man who ordered the
kidnapping. His intent was to make pornographic movies, but he subsequently ordered
the girl’s murder when the media attention around her disappearance became too great.
Their testimony was the basis of the prosecution’s case.

ND211 “World Trade Center”
On February 26, 1993, a terrorist’s bomb shook New York’s World Trade Center.
Investigators were able to locate the vehicle that housed the bomb and retrieved the VIN
number. This critical clue led to the apprehension of the terrorists responsible. At the
time, the United States did not have domestic terrorism statutes. Legislation currently in
place was enacted because of the World Trade Center bombing.

An undercover ATF agent went into deep cover to catch a known member of organized
crime suspected of murder, drug trafficking and gun running. After infiltrating the
organization for 14 months, the agent was asked to meet the “big guy” face to face. The
relationship that followed led to the arrest and conviction of this notorious mob killer.

ND214 “Family Cover-up”
A young wife was found murdered in the hallway of her workplace. Detectives
immediately suspected her husband due to his non-reaction to her death, all too perfect
alibi and a recent life insurance policy he purchased for her. They believed his brothers
had been potential accomplices in the crime, but did not have evidence to make arrests.
A year after the murder, a jailhouse informant came forward saying one of the brothers
confessed to the shooting. Authorities then had the information they needed to move
forward and arrested all three brothers.

A missing person’s report was filed on a young woman last seen with her former lover.
The FBI was brought into the investigation and the ex-lover quickly became the prime
suspect in the woman’s disappearance and possible murder. Investigators believed the
suspect must have had help and questioned his brothers as probable accomplices. They
confirmed the victim’s murder and the suspect’s involvement. The authorities feared that
the suspect knew of his brothers’ cooperation and was on the run.

ND218 “Doctor Beware”
A plastic surgeon and his secretary were gunned down in their office. The investigation
quickly focused on disgruntled patients. All but one woman were ruled out as suspects.
Detectives were unable to locate the woman until she was found in a hotel room in a
temporary diabetic coma. Also found in the room was a diary with what appeared to be a
hit list containing the doctor’s name.

ND219 “Slumber Party Abduction”
When 12-year-old Polly Klaas was abducted from her home during a slumber party, a
manhunt immediately ensued. On day 58 of the search, authorities finally got a break in
the case. When police arrested the suspect, who had a record of kidnapping and sexual
assault, he led them to Polly’s body. Her community and the nation were outraged that a
career criminal was free to commit this heinous crime. Her father championed an effort
to ensure that repeat offenders receive maximum sentences which led to California’s
adoption of the “3 strikes” law.

ND220 “Red Dog Case”
When state troopers were sent to check on a woman at her home, she was missing and her
son was found dead in the basement. A neighbor approached detectives at the scene and
revealed that her husband, an ex-convict, had been given a ride by the missing woman
and neither had been home since. Police then received a call from the missing woman
who had managed to escape her attacker. A manhunt ensued and 4 days later he was
located and arrested. Several months before the trial, the suspect, who was in the Federal
Witness Protection program, pled guilty to the crimes and prosecutors moved on to the
penalty phase. He was executed 2 years later, having committed 4 murders during his
life.

When a hospice nurse failed to make her daily call into work, two co-workers went to her
home to check on her. They discovered her husband shot to death, but no sign of her. A
massive search for the nurse was in its fifth day when 911 received a desperate call from
the victim who was being held in her kidnapper’s home. She was rescued by police and
her attacker arrested. During the police interview, the suspect confessed to the entire
chain of events providing a detailed account of his crimes.

ND222 “Fugitive on a Rampage”
Four inmates escaped from a maximum-security prison in rural Delaware. A short time
later, the murder of a woman was reported in a nearby community and investigators were
able to confirm through fingerprints that the murderer was one of the escapees. For the
next 24 hours, the suspect continued on his crime spree and was eventually apprehended
by two state policemen while he was hiding in a car. The suspect was charged and tried
for crimes including burglary, car theft and murder.

A young woman was found at a construction site having been tortured and murdered. It
appeared her death would go unsolved until another victim was found murdered in the
same manner. Detectives realized they had a sadistic serial killer on the loose and called

trap with an undercover operation and in turn apprehended the killer.

Seventeen months after the young woman’s disappearance, the suspect in her murder was
arrested. He rejected a plea offer of federal kidnapping and was charged with first-degree
murder. Investigators suspected he had used a gun in the murder and searched for
evidence of a purchase made by another girlfriend. She cooperated with authorities
resulting in the suspect’s conviction and subsequent sentence of death.

A serial sexual attacker tormented his victims by insisting that they pretend he was their
boyfriend. He further traumatized his victims by forcing a goodnight kiss on them.
Detectives finally got a break in the case when the usually careful predator left a crucial
piece of evidence behind… which included his DNA. In court, several victims had
severe words for the accused.

For nearly a year, a serial sexual predator stalked the beaches of San Diego terrorizing
more than a dozen victims. Detectives received a break in the case when crucial evidence
was left at the scene of a botched assault. The evidence led to a San Diego police officer
as the perpetrator. He was eventually found guilty of 38 felonies.

ND228 “Operation Green Ice”
A female agent was asked to be the cornerstone in a dangerous undercover operation.
Authorities planned to take down drug cartels through their international money
laundering that had been rampant among them for years. A fake investing company was
set up as the front to the illegal money dealings of the agent and her cartel clients. After
two years, the operation was complete and culminated in 170 individuals charged in the
U.S. and abroad. Due to the overwhelming evidence against them, most of the
defendants agreed to plea bargains.

With the aid of an informant, the DEA uncovered a vast number of safe houses used by
one of Mexico’s biggest drug organizations. In the raid of one of these houses, a map
leading to a warehouse was discovered. The warehouse was the starting point of a 1400-
foot tunnel that crossed the U.S./Mexican border and was to be used for drug transport.
The ensuing investigation culminated in the arrest and conviction of the U.S. head of
operations for that drug organization

The DEA planned two subsequent investigations/sting operations to infiltrate a drug
cartel. Their goal was to apprehend the ringleader who could testify to General Manuel
Noriega’s involvement in drug trafficking to the United States through his country of
Panama. This investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of the General.

With the cooperation of authorities from Spain and Switzerland, the DEA was able to
bring down an international group of conspirators manufacturing and distributing heroin.
The prosecution’s case hinged on the testimony of the heroin chemist responsible for the
heroin distributed in the 1960’s via the infamous French Connection.

The grounding of a ship used to smuggle 287 Chinese nationals to the U.S. led to the
drowning death of 10 of those immigrants. Interviews were conducted to separate the
crew from the illegal aliens. During questioning, the aliens revealed the inhumane
conditions under which they traveled. A search of the vessel uncovered information
leading to the arrest of several key members of an illegal alien smuggling ring. The
ringleader, still at large, was eventually located in Bangkok and extradited for trial.
Shortly before the trial, he entered a guilty plea, but later attempted to have it withdrawn.

A drug store owner was shot just inside the doorway of his house, the apparent victim of
a home invasion gone awry. Investigators quickly determined that the perpetrator must
have had inside information on the victim’s habits, as it appeared the target of the crime
was a large amount of money brought home from the victim’s store. Through employee
interviews and extensive detective work, authorities were able to locate and prosecute the
man responsible for this senseless crime.

A desperate 911 call during a home invasion revealed a complicated murder-for-hire plot
that uncovered a twisted sibling rivalry. The controversial case of the Hahn sisters
captured national headlines as one sister tried to have the other killed in order to assume
her identity and return to Korea. Many were baffled by the victim’s unending loyalty to
her sister.

ND240 “Forced Prostitution”
Believing they were being offered a ride to North Carolina, two teenage girls agreed to
leave the bus station with a young man. He took them to a motel where he and his two
friends sexually assaulted them and forced them to prostitute for them. One of the girls
was able to escape and get to police with her story. The detectives believed that in order
to capture the perpetrators and rescue the second girl they would need to put the first girl
back on the street as a decoy.

ND241 “Stealing Was Not Enough”
Police officers on nightly patrol discovered a man shot to death in an alley. Authorities
were unable to identify the victim for two weeks when a missing person’s report was
filed and the victim’s godfather identified him. The godfather implicated the victim’s
business partner/friend as a possible suspect. After a lengthy investigation, detectives
arrested three suspects in the case. The business partner was the mastermind behind the
plot to kill his friend.

ND242 “Cold Blooded Cupid”
A prostitute working on the street was shot with an arrow and subsequently died. The
media attention after the murder brought other victims forward who were able to give a
description of the suspect. The investigation showed that all the victims were either
prostitutes or had been attacked in known prostitution areas. Detectives were able to
locate the suspect through his purchase of the bows and arrows. The defendant chose to
defend himself.

ND243 “Latin Lover’s Murder”
The body of a young woman was found in a Dumpster wrapped in plastic bags. The fact
that she had been strangled caused detectives to believe this was not a random act of
violence. After identifying the victim, an anonymous tip led detectives to a witness who
heard the victim’s ex-boyfriend confess to murdering someone and putting them in a
Dumpster. By this time, the suspect had fled and 11 months later an informant told
detectives the suspect was in Chicago. He was arrested and tried for the murder of his
ex-girlfriend.

ND244 “Carlos Lehder”
The DEA was called when three men purchased expensive vehicles with cash. A DEA
agent put them under surveillance and started interviewing their constituents. During
questioning, a pilot told authorities about the entire operation of marijuana and cocaine
smuggling and fingered the leader of this group as Carlos Lehder, the notorious drug
kingpin. The DEA’s extensive international investigation culminated in the conviction of
all the individuals in this smuggling ring, including Carlos Lehder.

ND245 “The Ride”
A highway worker found the body of a young woman alongside the road. Her family
identified the victim and her sister provided a possible suspect. The following
investigation yielded only circumstantial evidence not believed to be substantial enough
for trial and the charges were dropped. The tenacity of the investigating officers on the
case convinced federal prosecutors to take it on. Through their subsequent investigation,
the suspect was eventually arrested and convicted of federal interstate kidnapping.

ND246 “Caught by Surprise”
Detectives were called to a homicide at the apartment of a known drug dealer. A young
man was dead in the kitchen and the drug dealer was nowhere to be found. Months later,
shared information between detectives and local DEA agents led to the identity of the
shooters. The DEA joined the investigation and authorities were able to locate the drug
dealer and ascertain the facts of the night of the murder. The suspects were both already
in custody on unrelated charges and were quickly charged with the murder.

U.S. Customs officials became aware of a group of drug smugglers traversing the
U.S./Mexican border on foot. They employed the unique skills of trackers to find and
follow the trail of these marijuana smugglers, known to officials as the carpet people for
their use of carpet over their shoes to conceal their tracks. The trackers located the
smuggler’s U.S. destination and arrested them along with the owner of the home.

The DEA, IRS, ATF and local police combined forces in an attempt to bring down a drug
trafficker known for his extremely violent methods. A witness surfaced who agreed to

This special edition of Arrest & Trial pays tribute to those officers who lost their lives in
the line of duty. First… A highway patrolman was gunned down during a routine traffic
stop by a man who showed no remorse for his crime and demonstrated sheer disdain for
authority. Next… A female police officer was shot in cold blood while attempting to
offer assistance. Her murderer was the son of a police captain. Lastly… It was a case of
mistaken identity when an officer became the victim of a contract hit meant for his
brother, who also happened to be a State Trooper. Luckily, this officer survived, but
